Every problem has a solution...
It's true and throughout my many years of designing this is the underlying approach I have always believed in when faced with a problem.
Somewhere out there is the answer that is just waiting to be discovered or worked out. Occasionally the solution comes quickly and quite literally out of the blue. At other times it needs to be coaxed out and methodically resolved step by step.
This is what makes design so fascinating and exciting. The unknown about when and what will appear and what it then creates in the form of a product.
a little bit about me.
Throughout my early years I was always both practical and artistic so an Industrial Design course was the natural form of higher education for me to embark upon.
I spent four years studying for my Industrial Design BA (Hons) at Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic and then a further three at the Royal College of Art in London where I received an MDes (RCA). During my college years I won several Royal Society of Arts Bursary Design competitions and in recognition of this was then made a Fellow of that organisation.
After leaving the RCA I spent 18 months working as a freelance designer in several London based Design Consultancies including PA Design, Lovegrove and Brown and Applied Products. During my employment with these consultancies I gained valuable experience about both running and managing design projects. Living in London and working for someone else wasn't for me though so it was inevitable that I would return to my roots in Yorkshire to establish my own business.
past projects
My career has been a little unconventional. Instead of predominantly working on other people's projects on a consultancy basis, for a large proportion of my time I have worked on my own. Often seeing problems or product 'gaps' in the market I have worked in a speculative manner creating and innovating new product ideas.
These ideas have then been developed to a styled and finished working prototype. I have then contacted companies who may be interested in the idea with a view to licensing the design and assisting in the final development and bringing to the marketplace.
As a result of this close collaboration I have often then been invited to work in a consultative manner for such a company on other design ideas that they have expressed an interest in.
what can I offer you
It's probably easier to start off by saying what I'm not.
elamdesign is not a multi staffed consultancy with offices all over the world. It is just one person, me!
Having said that for most of the time I have my faithful English Pointer dog, Harvey, at my feet under the desk.
I also have a wonderful and inspiring view from my office window at home. Because I work in this way I don't have huge overheads to cover meaning that I can provide a very cost effective solution to your design needs.
Sometimes a design project can involve technical innovation, sometimes it only requires the styling of a product. As a Product Designer I can offer both these services and this can be seen in the selected showcase of products that I have designed and which can be seen on this website.
